Take To The Streets And Demand A New Normal

For once, I’ll leave the opening words to someone else.

“I know this struggle is hard. I know it’s tiring arguing for a different system; it’s exhausting battling the press, it’s painful being called an extremist when you have fought your whole life for peace.

But friends, in years to come – when we look back, people will be in awe that you did not shrink back from the fire. So take your anger, take your pain, take your frustration, take your deep dissatisfaction with this system, and occupy every single space with your politics – without embarrassment, without hesitation, and without fear.”

Can you imagine how easy and tempting it would’ve been for the former Labour Shadow Minister, Laura Pidcock, to step back from the political frontline after unexpectedly losing her parliamentary seat in 2019?

But she didn’t.

Laura Pidcock took her anger, her pain, her frustration, and her deep dissatisfaction with this system, and carried on occupying every single space with her politics – without embarrassment, without hesitation, and without fear.

And now it’s your turn, in London, on Saturday the 26th June, at Midday. It’s your turn to demand a new normal.

The People’s Assembly knows how to do a rally. They get the best speakers, the biggest crowds, and undoubtedly some of the best homemade signs and placards that you will ever witness on the streets of any capital city in the world.

Political groups and organisations, Unions, activists, movements and thousands upon thousands of protestors will come together to demand a new normal, following eleven years of Tory austerity and a global pandemic that has made it perfectly clear that we cannot and must not go back to the old way of doing things.

You might be wondering what we are demanding, so let me give you an idea.

•We demand the government renationalise key industries.

•We demand the government properly fund a fully publicly owned NHS.

•We demand safe workplaces and the government does all they can to save jobs.

•We demand an immediate end to institutional racism.

•We demand decent housing for all.

•We demand the government keeps the market out of education.

•We demand an end to the utter scandal that is fire and rehire.

•We demand the government support international justice.

•We demand the sacking of corrupt politicians.

•We demand the government acts NOW to tackle the growing climate emergency.

•We demand the government fully funds social care.

•We demand the government kill the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill.

Of course we shouldn’t need to be demanding these things - but now we really do need to be demanding these things because we are up against a hard-right corrupt Conservative government with a large majority and an ineffective opposition leader - and that’s why your attendance and your voice can and will make all of the difference.

I’m hopeful of getting a very quick chat with a few very familiar and friendly faces on the day itself, and I’ll try and get a little behind-the-scenes article put together. In fact, I’ve even got a special socialist ‘Wroving Wreporter’ joining me for the day, the night, and the evening before.

So that’s why you need to attend. We’ve got a lot of demanding to do, and the more of us that are making those demands, the louder our voice will be.

If you can’t attend on the day you can get online and support the big rally simply by sharing the streams, clips, images and news of the event far and wide, after all, I can’t see us getting much help from the establishment media, because much of what we are standing against is exactly what they stand for.

Please use and view the hashtags - #DemandANewNormal and #NoMoreAusterity before, during, and after the rally.

Every voice matters.

But if you can get yourself down, or up to London for the day you will be able to witness the one and only Jeremy Corbyn at his huge-audience-addressing best, following his confirmation of attendance just recently.

This is what Jeremy had to say about the huge People’s Assembly rally on Saturday June the 26th -

If you’ve not heard Jeremy live before, come to the People’s Assembly rally in London on June the 26th. He is an excellent, passionate speaker, and a lifelong advocate for social justice.

I really don’t think I need to sell him to many people reading this.

Jeremy won’t be alone, of course. The good and great of the left will be in attendance, such is the importance of the event itself.

The idea is to meet up at the BBC in Portland Place, for 12 Midday, and then make our way to Parliament Square.

The People’s Assembly are expecting big numbers for what should be this year’s biggest and best rally by some distance, so come and be a part of something special, your own place in a little bit of the history of our socialist movement awaits. It will be one of those “I was there” moments for most of you.

Help spread the word far and wide beforehand, make a day of it, but please do remember, Covid-19 hasn’t just disappeared, so wear a mask, unless you’re exempt, and do everything you can to keep yourself and others safe.

So let’s practice it…

What do we want? A new normal.

When do we want it? NOW

See you soon.
