Cruel Britannia, Britannia Waives The Rules

I’m sure there was a time when British pride meant something to someone. We have things to be proud of. Our beautiful countryside, our scenic coastlines. Some of you might be proud of the Queen and all of the pomp and ceremony that comes with it. That’s not my thing.

I’m not sure about my own British pride. We talk about our welcoming and diverse nature, yet some sicko readers of the Daily Mail take pleasure in the drowning of a refugee seeking sanctuary. I can’t remember a time when our island has been overly welcoming of anyone with a different colour skin to them, and I’m in my forties.

Perhaps I’ve lived in the wrong part of the country. Some parts of the country, seem to be welcoming to anyone from anywhere, but this isn’t a common theme. Liverpool, for example, is about as near to the welcoming friendly Britain you hear about. Scotland seems much the same.

Cruel Britannia? Yes, absolutely.

When the finger-pointing politicians and hatemongering tabloids work together it means they want you to ignore the highest coronavirus death toll in Europe, put the recent GCSE/A-levels debacle down to a dodgy algorithm, believe the Conservatives recession is just a blip, and remain entirely oblivious to the mind-boggling cronyism and multi-million pound corruption, and turn your attentions to a rubber dinghy in the English Channel.

What kind of fucking plank would go along with this? At least 42% of the electorate and any one who somehow feels threatened by a human with nothing to their name apart from the damp clothes on their back, it would seem.

Britain is cruel. We have a cruel government, just think of the DWP - the destitution and death. The government got away with blaming the kamikaze actions of the banking industry on the poor, disabled people, migrants, low-paid workers, and they even got you to pick up the bill.

To me, this is cruel. And it is conscious cruelty.

Your government and their media act in the same way as the online bullies. But instead of pointing out a tweeter they disagree with for a ‘dog-pile’, they are pointing out an entire people to distract you with. They are using the plight of some incredibly desperate people as cloak of invisibility to throw over their well-documented catastrofuckery.

Cruel and callous doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Have any of the people lapping up the racism, the lies, and the pure hatred for a human with a different coloured skin, ever stopped for one moment and wondered why it’s a fucking national embarrassment that we even have to tell them that Black Lives Matter?

If Johnson could have his own Twitter profile it would be like the ones you often block on sight. You know the ones? They’ve usually got a bulldog profile picture, or something related to a crusade. Scroll down the timeline and you’ll find a tweet saying something like, “I’m not a racist but, Tommy Robinson is misunderstood/Arise Lord Farage”.

The only thing that separates the racist Johnson, and the millions who hang off his every lie is privilege. Take the privilege away from Johnson and he is the same thug you see down the pub, telling racist jokes to an adoring racist audience.

Britain is a cruel country.

Now I’m not even beginning to compare our plight to that of countries who are ruled by brutal despots. When you think of the continued bombardment of Gaza, that’s another level or criminality and cruelty altogether. Ours is an entirely different problem.

Ours is about blaming the problems caused by the government on to the shoulders of refugees or poor people. Ours is about a non-existent safety net. Ours are is about telling them that their lives a miserable because of someone else. Ours is about divide and rule.

Ours is about conscious cruelty.

Barely a day goes by without reading about the latest megamillions PPE deal being awarded to someone with links to Dear Leader Dom, a Tory donor, or a business with absolutely no qualifications or experience supplying PPE.

And this is mostly being done, right under our noses, without any contract being put out to tender, and with very little attempts to hide their tracks. It is blatant corruption, being carried out under the cover of the need for emergency supplies of PPE. Hundreds and hundreds of millions of pounds are being siphoned off by the elite, for the elite. More than £830 million has been awarded to at least Twelve different companies for PPE that has never materialised.

Doesn’t this seem a little bent?

How about the latest promotion for Dido Harding then? The perfect embodiment of the irremediably corrupt political system. Do you think they care for your reaction to their blatant corruption?

They can get away with this because they were allowed to get away with telling you the Prime Minister’s Chief Adviser wasn’t breaking any rules that time he and his family went for a 60 mile drive, at the height of lockdown, to a local beauty spot, on his wife’s birthday, to check his fucking eyesight.

Once you’ve pulled that off, that’s not much you won’t be able to get away with.

One rule for them and one rule for us.

Cruel Britannia, Britannia waives the rules.

Until next time.
